Singapore vs Australia

No, this is not an article on the World Cup!

Ever since we "announced" our intentions to work in Singapore, we have had very varied responses from people we know. We've had "Don't go! All the people that goes to Singapore NEVER returns!", "Why Singapore? Could it EVER be better than Australia?", "Great for you! You can have a maid now!".

Different reactions evoke different emotions from me. This is an article to share my heart about all this "Moving to Singapore"-thing.

We have thoroughly assessed our pros and cons about moving. The main motivation behind the decision to go is the pure and simple reason, "why not?". We are young, the girls are young and we have found them very adaptable. Alex has also been seeking an opportunity to get back into the finance field of IT as that's the stable grounds for his field at the moment. Mind you! we DID NOT seek out the job, the job sought us out! As Christians, we believe strongly that GOD timed this for us, for our future, for our growth. We can easily stay back here, slowly eat into our savings, struggle with finance, be stuck in a dead-end job, have less time at home with the kids and eventually have a break down in our family life.

We've been told that (by people moving to Singapore from Australia) Singapore does not necessarily work you harder than here in Australia. (Some might "work" longer in order to give a perception of working "harder"!!) Every level of stress is self regulated and not necessary worse off working in Singapore. We were assured with Alex's new company that they fully support young families and are happy with work-from-home situations when needed. We are thrilled to know that the furthest point in all direction of Singapore is about 45mins by commute. This is half the commute time of Alex's current commute time. So, we are looking forward to seeing more of daddy!!

The cost of living in NSW (the most expensive state in Australia) is really making life quite tough for everyone. We are not exempted from this struggle. Our hard earned nest egg is depleting at an alarming rate and with Alex taking up his recent job, we found that the pay standards has declined greatly. In effect the ins and outs of our month (as tightly as we can budget) is not equal. It's in the RED! Singapore taxes are lower. The pay is higher and even with upkeeping our present townhouse, we worked out that we will be able to save.

Then, there's the cultural issues. My girls will get to see their "relatives" a bit more, they will be exposed to multicultarism, pick up a few extra languages as absorb some hardworking ethics. I am drawn to these, as much as my girls are all CHINESE looking, they are Aussies at heart and I am not denying the struggles ahead. It's a short term struggle. It's well worth it and in Alex's famous last words, "If we all end up hating Singapore, the years of enjoying the cheap food there will be well worth it". So there, we officially decided to go to Singapore because of the FOOD!

I AM NOT GETTING A MAID! I am the maid! My role will forever be with my kids. I will only take a cleaner when our funds can support us. I am not and have not been seeking help. My hosue may not pass the "House and Garden" magazines but it's a home. I love my time at home with the girls, as a mom, as a wife and as a servant of Christ. My role is to help my husband save money for our future (Prov 31), not spend it!!! Now, I am thrown in the deep end of organising our lives here AND there for the girls and us. I am honestly feeling that I got the short end of the bargain. There's schools to consider, the cultural aspects of things, Mathena's upbringing and preschool years to toss about and, there's the option of homeschooling. Then, there's where we will live, where we will fellowship and who do I contact. There are so many things I'd like to preserve in my girls that I'll be battling in Singapore. I am fully aware of the challenges ahead. I am not strong enough to go through this. I need my Lord all the way. HE has given us the peace and direction with this decision. HE has been opening and closing doors for us all throughout the last month. He is more real now than ever before.

If we are needing anything, it's prayers, it's GOD's protection, it's lots of logistic smoothness and Grace! We will fly off 6th July 11.30am from Sydney. Talk later!

GARAGE SALE!!

GARAGE SALE

All done!

We've survived a HUGE day with our entire family "juggling" to make this day happen!
I had to help with a previous commitment(I could not get out of!), Letitia was babysat, Mathena had her grandparents for the morning, Alex juggled the Garage Sale!

Just a word of thanks for all your support and help in "spreading" the word around. We could have not done this without you. For all those who saw, bought and took stuff home. We hope you get plenty of use from our stuff and that it brings joy to your lives.

Keep in touch! There might be more stuff posted on this site!
(I am sure I have more junk to dig up and some stuff I overlooked!)

Week 2 of Packing, organising, sorting, throwing things out etc..

We've successfully survived another week of the above. We now have the CHAN grandparents and our CHUA grandma here under one roof. It's great to have them here as the more the merrier to distract little Mathena while I focus on getting from room to room to pack and sort.

We've had our little "chat" with Letitia and praise GOD, she took it very well. We deliberately omitted many negative things but she was smart enough to understand the consequence of the move. Tears flowed but was soon counteracted by the mention of Satay sticks in abundance, bike rides with our NEW bikes, as well as warmer weather to allow for more opportunity for wearing sun-dresses and dresses in general (our girls are very girly). There are still lots of issues we are yet to discuss and chat about but we are working at it. She asked GOD to look after the animals in the Night Safari Zoo so that by the time we get there, they are healthy enough for her to see (she is used to seeing empty cages in our local zoo here!)

We've been given more definate dates now. We will leave for Singapore on the 6th July, Thursday. This will allow us to have a Friday and the weekend there before Alex starts work on Monday. The 2-3rd July will be out packing/removals day and 4th, will be our cleaning up the house day. We are planning to move out of the house on Monday so the girls will not be too stress while all this is happening.

We are holding YET another garage sale on the 17th June which is next Saturday at 368 Princes Highway, Corrimal around 8am-1pm. This will be our last and we hope to sell all of our left over things. We've had very good responses for all the big furnitures and most people are happy to only pick them up the weekend before we go. There are still stuff that NEEDS to go so if anyone is interested...do make an offer and we'll take it!! They HAVE to go, we have no truck to cart them away, it will save us a lot of time and money.

There are still a lot of final detail stuff we have to handle. Everyone is asking if we are excited. I am saying a strong NO! As the work is yet to be done, and we have to juggle PLENTY! I am going out asking for as much help as possible to help us juggle especially nearer the last 4 days of packing, loading and cleaning.

Continue to uphold us in prayer, we've been really encouraged by your thoughts and prayers. We have seen many "invisible acts" done by our GOD to help us through even the most difficult of tasks.

Week 1 of Packing

Since last Friday when Alex signed and seal our lives to 5-7 years in Singapore, We have been going like a "boeing747" non-stop!!

We've since set up a separate blog to list all the BIG items of our household to "prefered" buyers. This will allow us to ask the stuff to be left in our homes until we fly off or at least move out to a self contained apartment. We been pretty happy with the response and very blessed with all our friends helping us clear our stuff. We made them real BARGAINs that noone can really resist...and it worked. Please see: Our Sale Blog.

We've had one removalist company come in and assess our bulk of things to fly and ship. We've had the paperwork and visa stuff sent out. We've made zillions of phonecalls to sort out and plan for our change of situation. Banks, schools, bills etc.

My ankle is still taking a long time to recover and I am often limping around after a wrong footing or a big day on my feet. Have been told by my Dr to keep my feet elevated, yeah right!!!

My mom is fine, a GOD sent and so patient with us. The girls are feeling the mess and insecurity with all the changes. I have told them in exchange to selling all their baby-bikes, they will get a new one soon! So far, no tantrums!! We plan to lay is all on Letitia the next week or so, so as she can have time to talk and own the event. My mom has put up with the "disciplines" and the no-nonsense attitude with the kids yet she's now loving the two girls more and more.

We'll be having the CHAN grandsparents here for about 10 days with one weekend in the middle. It'll be nice for the girls to see them though they might not be much talking involved. more people here to help distract Mathena while I head down bum up to sort and pack.

Our garage sale (real one) will have to be canceled. It's been bucketing these few days and it looks like another wet and freezing weekend. We've had 8-10 degs in the wet and wind, brrrr!

So, here's an update. I plan to be in bed by 10pm tonight, it's not 10.46pm! Yawwwnn!
